Whether you’re an avid angler or a first-time fisher in Kadavu Island you’ll find a gamefishing paradise. The archipelago sits atop a remote volcanic spike in the middle of the South Pacific. Coral-fringed lagoons surrounded by miles of pristine reefs with the deep blue sea beyond offer numerous fishing options.
Cast poppers or flies to monstrous giant trevallys, jig outer-reef drop-offs for huge dogtooth tuna or troll off-shore for record-sized wahoo, Pacific sailfish, yellowfin tuna, mahimahi and marlin.
Kadavu’s summer season runs January to May when the weather is generally calm. This is the ideal time of year for popper-casting and deep-water jigging for giant trevally and dogtooth tuna. ‘Catch & release’ is the usual fishing protocol.
Summer is also a great time of year for offshore trolling for pelagic species. Large numbers of yellowfin tuna migrate during this period with the largest fish reaching 200lbs/90kgs around February/March. The yellowfin schools gather close to the reef so are within easy reach of anglers from all resorts. Mahimahi (dorado) are a common catch as well as blue marlin up to 500lbs/225kgs.
The winter season, June to October, is generally characterized by south-east trade-winds. With the contours of the islands and the protective barrier reef, there is always a calmer lee-side for fishers to enjoy. In winter the island sees a run of Pacific sailfish. Huge numbers of wahoo gather into packs along outer reef edges. Kadavu is world famous for its wahoo run and several current IGFA wahoo world-records were caught here.
